Brighton Township Board Discusses Medical Marijuana

The Brighton Township Board of Trustees discussed medical marijuana at its regular meeting Monday night in preparation for the drafting of a regulatory ordinance. The growing and use of medical marijuana was approved in the state of Michigan in 2008, but many of the details of the law were vague and several townships in Livingston County are attempting to set up guidelines for its execution. Topics discussed included the placement of marijuana dispensaries and approved locations for the growth of marijuana plants. Michigan law permits patients to grow marijuana for their own use in their homes, but does not say the same for caregivers who are allowed to grow the drug but not use it themselves. The general opinion of the Board was that the growth of marijuana for sale to patients is a business and as such should not be permitted in the caregiver's home. Board members also indicated that they plan to ban marijuana social clubs since state law makes no provision for these businesses. Township staff will now put together an ordinance for the Township Planning Commission to finalize before being approved into law. Public hearings on the subject will be held before the ordinance is put into effect.
