At its meeting Tuesday, Broomfield City Council voted 7-3 in favor of extending the city's moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries until July 1, 2011.

The temporary moratorium is intended to provide city staff with sufficient time to look into proper regulations for dispensaries within city limits, as well as wait for new dispensary regulations signed into law by Governor Bill Ritter in June to take effect.

Broomfield voters will have their chance to decide if the city should ban dispensaries on Nov. 2, when they vote on Ordinance No. 1928 .

Council in August placed the question about a ban on dispensaries on the ballot. The ban was initially approved by council in July, but a successful petition drive forced it to suspend the measure and put it to a vote of residents.
