Santa Cruz, Calif. - The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a temporary ban on growing recreational marijuana commercially Tuesday afternoon in response to Prop 64.

Supervisors approved an emergency 45-day moratorium that makes growing marijuana to be sold commercially for recreational uses, as well as growing outdoors for personal use, illegal.

Medical marijuana, and growing weed indoors for personal recreational use, are still legal.

California voters passed Prop 64 last week.

The purpose of Santa Cruz's emergency moratorium is to give county supervisors time to create regulations over activities that were legalized by Prop 64.

While Prop 64 legalized recreational marijuana, the proposition gives counties and cities to have some power over regulations. These regulations include where cannabis can be grown, and how many dispensaries are allowed to set up shop.

San Jose already passed a similar moratorium.

Santa Cruz County hired its first-ever cannabis czar, Dan Peterson, in anticipation of California voters passing Prop 64. Peterson has the complex job of licensing, regulating, and taxing medical marijuana.

Peterson said even if the county had zero regulations, commercial growers still cannot legally sell weed to recreational users without obtaining a license from the state.
