An event deemed "The Great Calaveras Cannabis Debate" will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Murphys Suites Hotel.

Hosted by the Calaveras County Democratic Central Committee during its monthly meeting, the debate will feature three speakers.

Former Calaveras County Supervisor Merita Callaway, who served from 1993-2014, will speak on behalf of the efforts to regulate marijuana in the county. Her name has been associated with a citizens' initiative to permanently regulate the industry that has gathered enough signatures in advance of the November election.

Bill McManus will represent those who wish to ban commercial cannabis cultivation. He has been associated with an initiative that would have done that, but county officials rejected the petition last month for a lack of valid signatures.

Bob Bowman, the founder of the Sacramento chapter of National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, will also speak. He will argue for State Proposition 64, which sets out to legalize marijuana and hemp statewide, according to information from the California Secretary of State website.
