California's Marijuana Legalization Effort Going Down In Flames In Latest Poll

If you're a stoner and you want this legal-weed thing to happen in California, you better set your alarm clocks early two Tuesdays from now and get your ass to the voting booth.

Yet another poll shows Prop. 19, the initiative that would allow folks 21 and older to hold up to an ounce of pot, going down. But this one has it all but defeated, with 51 percent of likely voters indicating they're saying no, according to the latest USC College/Los Angeles Times poll.

Only 39 percent of those polled said they were giving legal pot a thumbs up, according to numbers provided to the Weekly by USC.

Where art thou, my stoners?

With support for snuffing this thing out above 50 percent, its chances are dim. Here's Prop. 19's Achilles heel: If the voting was limited to the 18-to-29 set, it would pass. Fifty-five percent of those folks are A-okay with it.

But 60 percent of the over-65 crowd say no. And here's the thing. Those people, they're not missing the election. They live for elections. And early bird specials at Norms. The 18-to-29 set? Good luck getting them out to the polls.

Ethnically speaking, Latinos are saying no at a rate of 57 percent. Whites: 48 percent. African-Americans: 49 percent. And the ladies, they don't like it either: 53 percent are opposed, according to the USC/Times poll.

Those still undecided: Nine percent. Those folks could still win this thing, but it seems like a long shot to us.

One of two things is happening, and I am still skeptical that Prop 19 won't pass.

Either people are finally opening their eyes to the fine print and worrisome aspects of the legislation, and deciding against it until it can be reworked or a new legislation comes out.

Or, people aren't being honest with the polls. I know several people who are business owners that if polled, would say no, just out of fear of letting anyone know they are for it. There are a lot of paranoid people out there, and they aren't going to be honest with the pollsters.

I do find it interesting that whites appear to be the biggest proponents of Prop 19 in the polls though.

The problem with prop 19 is similar to California's medical cannabis proposition when it passed. Both are very poorly written. Just look at all the confusion, misinformation and frustration surrounding those trying to legally comply with the med laws. Prop 19 could be alot worse.

Case in point: how is the 25 sq. feet determined? Is it 25 sq feet of soil on the ground? can the 25 sq feet be extended upwards with shelving and if so how high? If this was done a whole lot of plants could be grown. If a branch of a plant crossed outside the 25 sq ft area does it then become a crime? If it is a crime does the whole 25 sq ft area become illegal or just the buds on the branch growing outside the limit? If a person puts screen around his plot to keep branches from straying; will law enforcement consider this a violation? Is the 25 sq feet determined from straight down vertical lines? if this is true and it intersects a sloping planting bed the ground area its self would be greater than 25 sq feet. These questions only concern the area limitation.

If a person is unable to grow his own; could he rent 25 sq feet from another person then pay that person to be his gardener? If a person did this would the gardener/land owner be in violation of the law? If a person grows on his own property but hires someone to take care of his plants, is his gardener guilty of illegally cultivating cannabis?

Then you will have every idiot who knows nothing, trying to grow some seeds in his back yard. Imagine all the male plants spreading pollen all over your city. If prop 19 passes we all better get ready to cull seeds out of our cannabis or pay alot more for cannabis grown in space lab conditions.

LA times poll was done with real people, not robocalls. with issues like pot, people aren't as prone to answer truthfully speaking one one one, as they would be to a computer.

Stay out of jail, make sure to get your mom and granny to vote yes on 19!
