Plans for a medical marijuana facility in Owen Sound have been expanded to include the development, production and distribution of oils, creams and capsules.

Canadian Bioceutical Corporation President and CEO, Scott Boyes says the change will mean the company will spend between 12 and 14-million dollars in the Scenic City instead of the original 5-million dollar proposal.

Boyes says the new product line will mean the hiring of some highly skilled professionals including lab staff, and quality control professionals.

And the new product line will require more security at the site, extraction equipment, new packaging equipment and processing equipment.

Meanwhile, a zoning bylaw amendment in Owen Sound that allows for the medical marijuana plant to be built is being appealed to the Ontario Municipal board.

Resident Dustin McGregor wants to argue the amendment stifles small business.

However, the head of Canadian Bioceutical Corporation, Scott Boyes doubts the OMB will even heard the arguments.

He believes McGregor's complaint is largely against Health Canada.

For now Boyes says, renovation work is continuing at the old PPG location on 20th Street East in Owen Sound.

The medical marijuana company has passed a number of steps in getting the approvals needed from Health Canada.

Boyes hopes they get the final go-ahead by mid-summer so production can get underway.

The facility will occupy 155,000 square-feet and is expected to be one of the largest medical marijuana production plants in North America.

Once fully operational, it will employ more than 100 full-time employees.

In January, Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy welcomed "Canadian Bioceutical Canada or BCC as the newest manufacturer and a major new employer in the city."

He congratulated Peter Van Dolder and the ownership group of the Peninsula Pro-Growth Business Park (former PPG building) for revitalizing the building and making it possible to attract new manufacturers.
