Three hundred suspected cannabis plants and five kilos of cannabis have been found during a fire at a house in Wakefield. Fire crews called West Yorkshire Police officers to the property on Broadway, in Lupset, after discovering the drugs as they tackled the blaze.

The fire is believed to have been started by an electrical fault caused by modifications to the power supply. Electrical engineers were called in to make the supply safe and the plants and drugs were recovered by police. No one was injured during the fire and enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Kelly said: "We actually found freshly harvested cannabis which could have been on the streets imminently. This operation was being run at a house in a residential street."

Last month, officers from Normanton and Featherstone Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) uncovered a major cannabis factory in the Normanton area. The NPT executed a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at former council offices in Queen Street and recovered hydroponics equipment and in excess of 1,000 suspected cannabis plants.

Det Sgt Kelly urged people to be vigilant to the signs that a cannabis factory could be in operation in their local area.
