Chino Valley To Consider Raising Fees For Medical Marijuana Grows

Medical marijuana grow sites have had a polarizing effect on an Arizona town known as a prime spot for agriculture.

The Chino Valley Town Council has already tightened zoning laws for new grow facilities, and now it's considering charging higher fees to help offset costs.

Grow operations provide well-paying jobs, and workers spend their salaries in the community, said J.P. Holyoak, owner of a Phoenix grow facility and chairman of the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol.

"What they're doing is clearly an attempt to obstruct cultivation facilities from locating in Chino Valley," Holyoak said.

A new grow facility costs Chino Valley more than a clothing store, and this is part of what's been a five-year process to gauge the costs of doing business said Mayor Chris Marley. He supports raising initial license and inspection fees for grow operations.

"We're not about taxing people just because we're able to tax them," Marley said. "That's not where we should be as a governing agency."

Staff laid out options at an April workshop, but the Town Council asked them to do more research. They'll likely vote on the issue in about a month.
