AUBURN, Calif. -- Closing arguments were made Thursday in the drug trial of
a former gubernatorial candidate and his wife.

Steve and Michele Kubby were arrested after a raid on their Squaw Valley
home in January 1999. Police found more than 250 marijuana plants in the
house.

"There's plenty of circumstantial evidence with respect to the guilt of them
on all seven charges," Placer County prosecutor Chris Cattran said.

The Kubbys say that they had medical permission to use the drug.

Michele Kubby used the pot to quiet stomach problems and Steve Kubby says
the drug helps his pain caused by a rare form of adrenal cancer.

"The prosecution has not made its case, it's all smear, circumstantial
evidence and innuendo," Kubby said.

Steve Kubby was the Libertarian candidate for governor in 1998.
