Colorado: Inside A Luxury Marijuana Dispensary

Colorado's legalization of marijuana at the end of 2013 has set an entire category of legal, regulated commerce into motion that didn't previously exist. For Coloradans, what was previously the province of phone calls and street corners is now able to be fully and properly presented. Now 'good weed' can actually be marketed in an upscale environment. What might such an environment look like? The answer could come from Silverpeak Apothecary.

Though the prices at this dispensary are fairly ordinary, it provides a sumptuous experience for all customers while still conforming to state regulations. The dispensary was originally founded for medical marijuana in 2009, when Lewis, a doctor of veterinary medicine, was studying pharmacology and frustrated that he couldn't get marijuana for his father's cancer treatment. In 2014, it was converted to - according to the Denver Post, a rare occurrence.

For a new product, the space had to be "bright and inviting, comfortable and educational." The result is a space that looks much like a jeweller's shop, with two types of wood and white brick used as a highlight material for walls. A dedicated app offers an educational sales experience and allows for several points of sale around the store. This helps compensate for a legal limitation in Colorado: as a result of federal banking regulations, transactions must be done in cash.

The space had several limitations that Tangram Design had to work with, including a low ceiling and no natural light. However, they installed skylights to help counteract this, as well as lighting fixtures from Tom Dixon and armchairs and books to encourage customers to stay awhile (even though smoking in stores, due to Colorado's clean indoor air laws, is prohibited).

The dispensary is vertically integrated, with a growing facility (aptly named High Valley Farm) just 20 miles away organically growing its product in a 25,000-square foot greenhouse. For once, such a cosmopolitan experience doesn't have to mean product from a far-flung place.
