A District of Columbia marijuana activist is going to be driving a car with the license plate 420, a reference to the drug, thanks to the city's mayor.

Adam Eidinger, the chairman of the D.C. Cannabis Campaign, led efforts to put a marijuana legalization initiative on last November's ballot. The Washington Post (D.C. mayor offers pot activist Tag 420 for his efforts - The Washington Post ) reports Mayor Muriel Bowser offered him the 420 tag number.

Bowser said in a letter to Eidinger that the tag number was an "opportunity to acknowledge your commitment to and work on behalf of your neighbors in the District." She did not acknowledge the number's significance.

The mayor and D.C. Council members have long given low-numbered license plates to friends and allies, but a spokesman for the mayor says the plates don't give drivers any extra privileges.
