ELON — The national debate over marijuana laws is coming to Alamance County.

An event billed as “The Great Marijuana Debate” will be at 7:30 p.m. at Elon University. It will be in LaRose Digital Theatre in the university’s Koury Business Center on O’Kelly Avenue.

Information about the debate on Elon University’s Web site says it “will address questions on whether to legalize marijuana, the use of medical marijuana and the enforcement of marijuana laws.”

Kris Krane, former executive director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (also known as SSDP) will debate Paul Chabot of the Freestyle Foundation.

Students for Sensible Drug Policy has a Web site that describes the organization as “working to mobilize students to change punitive drug policies, particularly those that negatively impact young people and students.” The organization successfully challenged retroactive application of a law denying federal aid to students with drug convictions.

Chabot is an Iraq War veteran and a Republican candidate for the California State Assembly. His campaign Web site describes him as an “anti-drug activist.”
