Tallahassee, Fla. - The future of cannabis distribution in the Capital City is set to be under discussion at a city commission meeting.
Wednesday night, city commissioners will introduce a moratorium on the medical marijuana treatment centers and dispensaries, as well as set dates for two public hearings on the matter.
This suspension would put a six month hold on new applications for dispensaries, but will not effect those that are already in operation.
If this goes into effect, it would allow the city to study and consider any potential impacts these dispensaries and treatment centers have on the environment.
At this time, there are not any specific regulations in regards to the land and dispensing facilities.
Other regulations the city would like to discuss during the postponement would be the location and siting of each of the facilities.
"We wanted to slow things down and make sure those dispensaries that are allowed under state law go in appropriate places within our city," said Commissioner Scott Maddox. "We're going to put a moratorium, hopefully, and be able to catch our breath and let the state regulatory process run its course and then cite very carefully where these dispensaries will be located."
This moratorium would give the city a chance to see what regulations and ordinances the state decides on and go from there.
Some regulations the state regulatory process would be responsible for includes the types of diseases and conditions eligible for medical marijuana, and the number of grow operations allowed.
On a local level, this suspension would allow officials to zone the area and make sure dispensaries are in an appropriate part of town.
