The first licensed dispensary for medical marijuana in Orlando plans to open to the public Friday.

The Knox Medical dispensary, at 1901 N. Orange Ave. in Ivanhoe Village, is more like a limited pharmacy available only to people with doctor’s prescriptions for low-THC cannabis.

The Winter Garden-based company is led by founders José Hidalgo, chief executive officer, and Bruce Knox, chief operating officer. Knox and his family have run Knox Nursery for generations.

Knox Medical patients registered with the state’s Compassionate Use Registry will be clients of the new store. A grand opening is set for 11 a.m. Friday.

Knox Nursery won the state’s competition to be the medical pot grower and dispenser for the Central Florida region. Only nurseries with a track record of 30 years or more were eligible.

The company began delivering medical pot to clients in December, from its nursery at 940 Avalon Road in Winter Garden.

Knox’s affiliate sought permitting for the site more than a year ago, before the city placing a moratorium on medical pot stores after receiving several permit requests for them. The city has extended the ban to July.

More than 630 physicians have been licensed by the state — with dozens in Orlando — to recommend medical cannabis to patients even though the state is still hammering out rules for the process. Specialties range from family practice and eye clinics to pain centers.

In November, voters approved a constitutional amendment that allows doctors to recommend full-strength marijuana for a variety of ailments including glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, Crohn’s disease and PTSD.
