Monterey County sheriff's deputies and state and federal law enforcement agents discovered a large marijuana plantation in Los Padres National Forest with an estimated street value of more than $85 million.

During a random search flight last week, state Department of Justice agents spotted the field of more than 17,000 plants hidden in the national forest's Arroyo Seco area near Greenfield.

Forest Service officers and sheriff's deputies reported finding fertilizer, pesticides, canned food, and a campsite but no suspects when they raided the plantation Friday at 8:30 a.m. Officers said the plants were watered by a gravity-powered drip irrigation system.

Officers flew the plants out of the national forest and county deputies destroyed them, the Sheriff's Office reported.
