"We use cannabis politically and you can too," said Roger Christie, founder
of the new Hawai'i Cannabis Party.
"Our platform is to use cannabis as a solution for some of the social,
cultural and political concerns facing Hawai'i," said Christie. "Cannabis
can solve the war on drugs immediately and economically within 120 days
[growing period] and increase social harmony.
"We have in effect ended the war on marijuana," said Christie of his Hawai'i
Cannabis Ministry, which boasts a 100-percent success rate from arrest,
prosecution or conviction.
"It's quite daunting to start a new political party," said Tracy Ryan, chair
of the Hawai'i Libertarian Party. "We admire people who want to push an
issue - it's better than people who sit at home and don't do anything."
When asked whether Christie's former association with the Libertarian Party
would detract from her party's legitimacy, Ryan said "No. In the long run it
might be helpful to us. A lot of people who join the Hawai'i Cannabis Party
might find out they're Libertarian."
"We want regulation. Let's apply all the laws that apply to alcohol and
apply them to marijuana," said Nick Veltre, the Cannabis Party's O'ahu
contact. "Here is a way to get pot out of the school."
Nearly 800 signatures from registered voters remain necessary to place the
party's candidates on a ballot. Veltre will host an event by the end of
summer to obtain the necessary signatures.
