Hemp industry sparking overseas interest
Queensland's fledgling hemp industry is stirring the interest of overseas buyers.

Bundaberg-based Agrifibre Industries will begin trial plantings of 34 new varieties of industrial hemp in a fortnight.

It hopes to plant 500 hectares by September next year.

Interim chief executive Jim Hall says there is big potential for export, particularly to Asia.

"We've had a lot of interest from China, who traditionally has been one of the major exporters of industrial hemp fibre," he said.

"We've had interest from them for long-term contracts to supply, also from the Japanese, who were traditionally supplied by China."

"China's no longer exporting, so they are now looking towards Australia to supply them with the fibre they were using."
