The first industrial hemp trials in south-east Queensland are being harvested, with varying results.

In the Murgon and Kingaroy region, crops have produced up to 12 tonnes per hectare, but only five tonnes per hectare have been harvested at Childers.

Eco-Fibre Industries managing director Philip Warner says it is commercial quality hemp, and processing capability will be analysed, before selecting the best location for a processing mill.

He says there will be greater returns if it is processed locally, because the project is more than just cropping.

He says industrial hemp is a manufacturing industry, using the organic fibres to make products from plastics to car interiors.

"We look forward to being able to encourage the right sort of assistance from both the Government as well as business enterprises within those regions to get this full value chain up," he said.

"There are a significant number of elements that have to come together to be able to make this work efficiently and have benefit for the region."
