The Planning Commission is looking at regulating medical marijuana caregivers as either a home business requiring registration with the city or as a business only in industrial zones.

Commission members are dealing with the issue to set regulations for defined caregivers to grow up to 12 marijuana plants each for five patients.

Several commission members, including City Council member Jerome Thomas-Kobes, said the Legislature should set regulations for growing medical marijuana.

“They (legislators) make the laws here,” Thomas-Kobes said. “This has nothing to do with the Planning Commission.”

The commission scheduled a hearing on extending a moratorium on medical marijuana for 4 p.m. Jan. 25 at City Hall, 270 S. River Ave.
