Medical marijuana products in Illinois would be required to carry warning labels about possible side effects under a bill proposed by a Republican lawmaker.

Representative Dwight Kay says the goal is to treat medical marijuana like other prescription drugs that warn patients about possible adverse effects. His bill doesn't specify what warnings should be on the products, but leaves it to the state health department to decide.

Kay says he would like to see language warning about drowsiness, impairment while driving, and how the drug may affect pregnant women.

The measure is up for a committee vote on Monday.

Medical marijuana sales began in Illinois in November under a 4-year pilot program. Listing possible side effects of the drug is not among the current labeling requirements.
