I have this 100w HPS bulb that won't light in any sockets that I put it in. It fits, it just doesn't light when turned on. What must I do to get the light to work? Any input is much appreciated, thanks.

All (HID) (High intesity discharge) lights must run on a ballast only system, You have to have a 100 watt HPS ballast to run that bulb.

Do you think i'd be able to find a ballast for it locally or will I have to order one? What does the ballast do that allows it to run?

You should be able to find a ballast for it, check lowes, home depot, your local plumbing and lighting stores
