Brookline officials are asking residents whether the town should ban recreational marijuana shops as part of an online survey.

Officials rolled out the three-question survey earlier this month to get public input as they develop local rules to govern recreational marijuana retailers.

In November 2016, voters in Brookline and statewide supported legal sales of recreational marijuana. The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission, which will manage recreational marijuana sales, expects sales to start by July 1.

Brookline's Licensing Review Committee is considering local regulations for recreational pot shops, while the Planning Department has been working on zoning by-laws to regulate these uses, according to the survey.

The survey's first question asks residents whether they would like to ban "any or all" non-medical marijuana uses, including marijuana retail product manufacturers, cultivators, and marijuana lab testing facilities. Residents can also decline to ban any marijuana establishments.

The survey also asks residents whether they would like to set a cap on marijuana retail establishments, as well as give feedback on proposed areas of town where retail, cultivation, and lab testing for marijuana could be allowed.

Officials hope to file proposed rules governing recreational marijuana sales for the May 2018 annual Town Meeting, according to a town statement.
