Stoughton, MA – Residents in Stoughton could be asked to vote on a ballot question that would ban recreational marijuana sales in town.
The selectmen voted Tuesday to request special counsel to draft a ballot question. If the question passes, non-medical marijuana sales in Stoughton would be banned.
The request for the question came from Stephanie Patton, Karen MacDonald, and interim Police Chief Donna McNamara. In November, Stoughton voted in support of Question 4 by a slim margin of 263 votes.
"We would like to see how the residents feel now that they've seen some of the outcomes of the law passed," McNamara said.
Under the legislation from Question 4, communities can opt-out of the sales component of the bill, effectively banning recreation shops. The two-step process requires the ballot question and a second vote at Town Meeting, where by-law changes are usually voted on.
If a ballot question is produced, it will be placed on the Annual Town Meeting ballot.
