Maine Considers Testing Drivers For Marijuana Impairment

Lawmakers are considering a new bill that would add driving under the influence of marijuana to Maine's OUI law.

Under the bill, anyone with blood THC levels above five nanograms would be considered under the influence and guilty of an OUI.

Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce says he is backing the bill but worries about the testing process. "My concern with drug testing, it's expensive, there's no machine right now that I know of, that can test on that so it'd be interesting to see how that hurtle is overcome," Joyce said.

Officers currently test for drugs using blood and urine tests that take up to several weeks to get back and are costly.

Under the bill, drivers found guilty of driving under the influence of marijuana would face license suspension.
