Marijuana March In Downtown Bakersfield

Last Saturday, dozens of people participated in the Global Marijuana March. And, part of that event happened right under the noses of Bakersfield police officers.

It's an event that goes on in cities across the nation. But, the Bakersfield Police Department says it had no idea the march stopped right in front of its station.

Video surfaced online from Saturday afternoon when dozens of people marched for marijuana. Many held pro-pot signs as they marched down 24th Street. The march came to a halt when they reached the Bakersfield Police station.

Michaela Beard, BPD spokeswoman, says the group was in front of the station for about five minutes before moving forward. She says police didn't receive any calls about the group in front of its building and officers had no idea it happened until she saw the video Thursday.

The participants appear to range in age from teenagers to adults. You can see two girls in the background smoking something.

The march was organized by Bakersfield's NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

The group issued an online invitation to anyone interested, explaining it would meet at "high" noon and march from Beach Park to the Liberty Bell.

But, marchers made sure they stopped at police headquarters along the way.

This Global Marijuana March started in New York in 1999, but has spread through the country and internationally.
