Medical Cannabis University Continues To Grow In Hillsboro

Pot jokes aside, Hillsboro's own Oregon Medical Cannabis University (OMCU) off Cornelius Pass Road has grown a bit since it opened to students last November. Founder and president Claudia Lavander has been joined by four new teachers at the school, though original partner Clancy Adams has left.

The for-profit school started in October 2009 and started classes the next month at a business complex in the Reedville area just north of TV Highway on Hillsboro's east end. The opening received attention from the media in the local area, as well as nationally, and even coverage as far away as Poland.

Hillsboro and Portland's west side were selected by the founders since there are no other similar resources for medical marijuana on the west side. The student body comes from as far away as Bend, Eugene, and the Oregon Coast.

Courses at the school focus primarily on growing marijuana, preparing it for medical use or pain relief, and for teaching the different ways it can be prepared for use in other products such as food and drinks and still receive the medicinal benefits. Some classes at OMCU are a single session seminar, while others are multi-week classes lasting up to six weeks. New classes start throughout the year. Students are graded, and do receive certificates, but there are not any degrees.

Though they do not sell cannabis, nor the seeds, but they do sell related items to those with a valid Oregon Medical Marijuana Program card. In fact all students must have a valid card to enroll in classes at OMCU. Class fees run from as low as $35 up to $400 for a six-week course. In time, they hope to add online courses to the offerings.

The school also hosts a bi-monthly Resource Social event to allow medical marijuana card holders to network with each other. OMCU also has a resource center for their members.
