Medical Marijuana Dispensary Opens

Arizona - A new medical marijuana dispensary recently opened in Lake Havasu City and is serving at least 600 patients by offering 18 strains of marijuana, marijuana edibles, marijuana juices and marijuana-infuses ointments. "We're helping the patients," said medical marijuana dispensary consultant Joel Williams.

DISPENSARY:
With card-holding patients entering the dispensary, the stark and sterile lobby is comparable to that of a doctor's office. Patients check in, and wait their turn for access into the bud tender room, which is a secured area. After selecting their medicines, the patients pay for their selections and are free to go. The dispensary officially opened its doors Oct. 10, and employs seven or eight individuals. There are at least two med-tenders on staff at any one time to help patients. Inside, past the lobby, is the bud tender room, secondary reception area for privacy, a staff processing area, and a security room. "We had an intentional soft opening so we could be sure the systems are in place and the operation is successful," Williams said.

Security measures at the dispensary are comparable to that of a bank, and include 46 security cameras, an elaborate alarm and monitoring system, bullet-proof glass and bullet-proof walls. City zoning issues detailing where the dispensary could be located within city limits and construction delays pushed the opening of the dispensary about 90 days past the directors' anticipated July opening. In all, the local dispensary has been in the works for about 2 1/2 years.

The dispensary directors, who have chosen to remain anonymous, are ironing out details to provide at-home delivery or consultation services to homebound patients, Hospice patients or those patients requiring maximum privacy. One hundred applicants applied for the few positions at the dispensary, and the organization still collects two to four a day since opening. "The biggest challenge is educating patients to understand the only legal place to purchase in this state is at a dispensary," Williams said. "Any other way is a felony." Cardholders or caregivers with cultivation rights will cease to be allowed to grow now the dispensary is operational.

POLICE:
Lake Havasu City Police Sgt. Troy Stirling said it'll be business as usual at the local police department when it comes to the dispensary. "They've been involved with the police department since the onset," Stirling said. Stirling called it an initial good start for the dispensary in the community and police will address anything that comes up on a case-by-case basis. At police headquarters, local authorities are proactive and recently participated in a multi-agency training that included legalities surrounding marijuana investigations hosted by a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department squad. Attendees included individuals of MAGNET, Kingman Police Department, Bullhead City Police Department, Mohave County Sheriff's Office, Yuma Police Department, La Paz County Sheriff's Office, and Glendale Police Department.

CARDS:
Williams provides consultation for the different directors of each of the dispensaries including Yuma, Parker, Quartzsite, Havasu, Kingman, Bullhead City and Fort Mohave. Williams, who also operates Herbal Remedies, helps individuals determine if they're eligible for a medical marijuana card in Arizona, and then helps those individuals navigate the Arizona Department of Health Services medical marijuana sign-up system. To date, Williams has helped more than 3,000 people in the area obtain their medical marijuana cards. Of those cardholders, 600-800 of those are based in Havasu. For more information, contact Williams at 928-846-9191. At the dispensary, top sellers include the topical marijuana-infused balm that works wonders for arthritis. The 18 strains of medicine vary in price with premium strains being the most expensive. However, all are med-tested to ensure they are free of pesticides and mold before being made available to patients.
