Columbia Care's medical marijuana facility is set to open on Route 3, in Plattsburgh, but officials said marijuana won't be produced at the North Country location.

The facility is being operated by Columbia Care, one of five registered organizations operating medical marijuana facilities in New York.

New York's program provides access to medical marijuana to certified patients suffering from cancer, HIV/AIDS, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, intractable spasticity caused by damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, neuropathies and Huntington's disease.

In order to obtain a medical marijuana card, patients must receive a Department of Health medical marijuana program certification from a registered physician.

Plattsburgh's Mayor Jim Calnon said he's pleased with the city's partnership with Columbia Care and said he's not too concerned about security at the facility.

"There are cameras watching the cameras is the way one person put it. There's not going to be a line of people in the building. There's going to be usually just one patient at a time, so it's designed to be very secure," said Calnon.

Over 250 physicians statewide have registered for the medical marijuana program and just about 300 people have been certified by their doctors.

Plattsburgh's Columbia Care facility is set to open Jan. 26.
