A Medford man registered as a medical marijuana grower faces charges after police responding to a complaint on Thursday discovered he was growing more than the law allows.
Detectives from the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement Team contacted Doni Huff Jr., 27, at his home on the 500 block of Haven Street to investigate a report about illegal sales of medical marijuana.
After an interview, police charged the grower with the manufacture and possession of marijuana and his case was referred to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office.
Investigators seized eight mature plants from the property that ranged from 2 feet to 6 feet tall, which were more than the legal limit of six mature plants per medical marijuana card, said Lt. Tim Doney of MADGE.
Doney said medical marijuana growers are allowed to posses six mature plants, 18 starts less than 12 inches tall and 24 ounces of marijuana.
Doney said while there are statistically few medical marijuana cardholders who have been charged with breaking the law, "we do run into a lot of people that are growing and selling it illegally."
Anna Bell, Medford office manager of Southern Oregon Alternative Medicine, which supports use of medical marijuana, said cardholders and growers should take the time to learn and follow all state laws regarding growing pot.
"You have to abide by the law or you're going to pay the price," she said.
