Medical Marijuana Patients Sought to Aid Provider's Defense

LONG BEACH, CA – Medical marijuana patients who used the services of either of these two Long Beach, CA collectives, the 4th and Elm Natural Health collective and 2200 collective, at any time from May, 2009 through December 17, 2009. Patients are being sought to aid in the defense of the collective's founders, Joe Grumbine and Joe Byron, as the pair face serious criminal charges in a preliminary hearing scheduled to start on February 7 in Long Beach Superior Court.

Grumbine and Byron were arrested in a terrifying SWAT style raid involving 120 armed officers, helicopters and drug sniffing dogs over a year ago. Ironically, Grumbine had been cleared of all charges in a similar case just 5 weeks before the raid took place, with the court finding him in full compliance with California law.

Nonetheless, the pair now face charges of illegal sales of a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell, and tax evasion. Lead attorney Chris Glew remains optimistic that, just as in the first case, the charges won't stick because his clients have done nothing wrong. However, he does need the help of patients who were helped by the collective in order to defend Grumbine and Byron.

“While we helped many patients with low and no cost medicine, transportation, food, and other necessities,” says Joe Grumbine, “all our records were seized in the raid and we have no way of contacting people who could now help us beat these ridiculous charges. It's another way the system tries to keep medical marijuana providers down.”

Grumbine and Byron are pleading for any of their former collective members to step forward and tell their story. The importance of input from collective members who were helped by Grumbine, a man whose attorney has dubbed “The Mother Theresa of Weed,” cannot be overstressed. Anyone wishing to help should call Joe Grumbine or Chris Glew as soon as possible as an effective defense against the State of California is being prepared as this release goes to print.
