Dozens of people from across Ohio and Michigan are testifying today at a medical marijuana hearing two Ohio senators are holding inside the student center auditorium on the University of Toledo's Scott Park campus.

Many have given personal anecdotes of how cannabis has helped them manage pain and deal with cancer treatments. Participants also have spoken about other medical uses for marijuana, such as curbing the effects of seizures.

Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken testified he favored Issue 3, the proposed constitutional amendment rejected by Ohio voters last November that would have allowed medical and recreational marijuana use in Ohio. He said it appeared on a ballot as a citizen-led initiative because the Ohio General Assembly failed to do its job. He predicted that will happen again if legislators don't come up with a new plan first.

Ohio senators Kenny Yuko (D., Richmond Heights) and Dave Burke (R., Marysville) are taking testimony across the state.
