MI: Township Talks Medical Marijuana, But Doesn't Get Far

Kalamazoo Township trustees held a preliminary discussion Monday on how they plan to handle the medical marijuana issue, but made no decisions.

Like most communities, Township Manager Dexter Mitchell said, until the state gets organized, they will just have to wait before setting their own policies. The new model for the distribution of medical marijuana requires that each township, village and city decide whether they will let marijuana growers, transporters, testing labs and dispensaries locate in their communities before they get a share of the resulting tax revenues.

Most of the details have not yet been drafted by the state. This process could take on added importance if it will also serve as the model for distribution of recreational marijuana.

A group behind a petition drive to legalize pot in Michigan says they are on pace to get more than enough signatures to put the issue on the November 2018 ballot.

They say, two months into the six-month process, they have 100,000 signatures, or about 40 percent of the 250,000 they need. They plan to shoot for 350,000 to guarantee a spot on the ballot.
