Hackensack - A 17-year veteran UPS driver has been accused of using his truck to transport drugs, and he and his son are facing criminal charges.

Josiah Davis, 40, of Passaic, and his son, Jerome, 23, of Clifton, are accused of being part of a cross-country drug ring that shipped marijuana from California to New Jersey.

"We do believe this has been going on for some time," Police Chief Ken Zisa told The Record of Bergen County.

The two were arrested after they picked up two boxes that had been shipped via UPS to Hackensack from Santa Monica, Calif. Authorities said the packages contained 66 pounds of marijuana, which has an estimated street value of $740,000.

Investigators began tracking the packages after a narcotics team discovered their contents while they were on a conveyor belt at Los Angeles International Airport.

Josiah Davis is accused of having marijuana-filled packages sent to businesses on his route, and then allegedly signing for them himself instead of delivering them.

On Friday morning another driver delivered the packages to a Hackensack business. A few hours later, Josiah Davis allegedly showed up and said he needed to pick up two boxes that had been accidentally delivered, authorities said.

The family declined to comment when reached by the newspaper. UPS officials also declined to comment.

Both men were charged with possessing more than 25 pounds of marijuana and marijuana possession with the intent to distribute. They were being held on $1 million bail each.
