The Biggest Little City is one step closer to recreational pot after city council members unanimously voted to adopt the ordinance.
Pending final approval at next week's council meeting, it would grant temporary, privileged business licenses to four local medical dispensaries, allowing them to sell recreational marijuana.
Businesses had to apply by May 31st for this early start program. Those that made it and are expecting a license at the next meeting: The Sierra Wellness Connection, MYNT Cannabis Dispensary, Blum Reno and The Dispensary. All of these are located in commercial zones, which are the only areas legally permitted to house dispensaries, for now.
Dispensaries will sell recreational marijuana at a similar rate to medical marijuana, but with that additional 10% excise tax.
The temporary licenses will expire in about a year. At that point, local and state officials will review the ordinance and decide if any changes need to be mad.
Last month, there was concern about a possible delay for distribution licenses, which could ultimately delay recreational sales. Wednesday afternoon, the Department of Taxation told us five liquor wholesalers in the area have already applied to become distributors. They expect to issue those licenses before residents can buy recreational pot, starting July 1st.
Applicants who applied for a distribution license but are not liquor wholesalers for now must still wait as a judge put a temporary restraining order on the Department of Taxation to issue licenses to anyone other than liquor wholesale license holders.
