A GoFundMe page has raised thousands of dollars to help pay for medical marijuana for a local patient who suffers from seizures.
Ricky Montee has suffered from seizures since he was 4-years-old. Medical marijuana helped, but it would cost his family $32,000 to pay for treatment for one year.
His sister, Molly, set up a GoFundMe page to help with the cost. She's his guardian, best friend and full-time aide.
On Friday, they played one of Ricky's favorite games. Molly said it wouldn't be possible without medical marijuana. And she said they wouldn't have been able to afford the medication if it weren't for the kindness of friends and strangers.
"He cares about everybody," she said. "So to see everybody reach back out to him to try to help him, it was amazing."
The pair is just 11 months apart, so from an early age, they shared an inseparable bond. But things changed when Ricky started having seizures.
"Normal people have, like, one specific part of their brain that seizes, and you can treat that specific spot," Molly said. "But in his case, they fire all over the place, so you can't pick a place and treat it."
Ricky had numerous surgeries, including having half of his brain removed. The surgeries didn't help, but medical marijuana did.
"He changed so much," Molly said. "He was so much more calm. He was starting to read and do math."
They waited three years for medical marijuana to become legal only to find out it cost too much.
"Right now, it's $530 a week," Molly said.
So she created a GoFundMe page. One week later, they had enough donations for Ricky to get back on the medication. Currently, the page has raised over $6,000.
Molly didn't like the idea of asking for money, but she said nothing will stop her from making sure her little brother has a better life.
"At the end of the day, I would do anything for him, and he's the same way with me," she said. "He's very protective, and it just works."
When they run out of GoFundMe money, Molly said a generous man came forward and offered to help the family out.
