Changes are coming to New York State's medical marijuana program with the goal to expand access for patients who need the drug.

"I think lawmakers realize it's an industry that can help a lot of people," Gerald LaRocca, the pharmacist at Pharmacannis, a medical marijuana dispensary in Liverpool, said. "So they are changing and looking at a lot of different avenues."

Nurse practitioners along with physician assistants will now be able to prescribe the drug and chronic pain will be added to a list of approved conditions.

New York dispensaries will also be able to sell product to each other, which helps increase variety offered to patients.

"New York State wanted to maintain a lot of control because they just didn't know where this was going to lead," LaRocca said. "And I think everyone is starting to get more comfortable with the industry and what it can do."
