Orange County’s medical marijuana research and development facility in Hamptonburgh is under way after receiving state approval.

Dr. Teddy Scott, a CEO of the company, told the Orange County Partnership on Thursday that he already has a successful PharmaCannis facility operating in Illinois, where he said it is providing a major boost to the economy.

The new Orange County PharmaCannis facility is expected to cost approximately $18 million. Scott said the project is enormous in scope and having the support of the county and community was a major factor.

“This is an incredibly complicated facility, 125,000 square feet, with multiple operations going on that has to be built incredibly fast and has to be done right and so, this is not something you can do by yourself, you have to have numbers of groups, people, officials working together with you in true partnership,” Scott said. “So very early on, that’s the first thing we looked for is the reception that we’re going to get, whether people are going to be there working with us and we saw that right away in Orange County.”

The county and local elected officials have been very supportive of medical marijuana in the county, especially after learning that cannabis may be the only medication to help people with conditions like chronic seizures.

County Executive Steven Neuhaus called Scott “the real deal. I look forward to them not only under construction but, actually in manufacturing and helping people in New York.”
