Aston Township officials will hold a special meeting Wednesday to consider a medical marijuana ordinance after being approached by someone wanting to grow cannabis.

Officials scheduled the 7 p.m. meeting at the municipal building on Pennell Road after the person expressed interesting in a location withing the township to grow and process marijuana for distribution to wholesalers, the Delaware County Times reported.

The person has remained anonymous because permitting has not been approved and it's early in the process.

The meeting would give residents a chance to voice their opinions in the early stages of the approval process, Mike Higgins, vice president of the board of commissioners, told the paper.

If approved, the facility would not be located in a residential area, near schools, day care centers or shopping districts, Higgins said.

Pennsylvania became the 24th state to allow the use of medical marijuana after Gov. Wolf signed the medical marijuana bill in April. About 50 dispensaries will eventually be located in 67 counties.
