ABOUT $8 million worth of cannabis has been seized and destroyed following police raids at various locations surrounding the Tweed Shire.
Supplies of the illegal drug were discovered in various locations during the first raids of this year’s Cannabis Eradication Program.
The raids, which began on November 8 and ended on Friday, turned up more than 4800 plants, some up to two metres high.
A further 25kg of dried cannabis head was also seized by police.
Areas targeted included Lillian Rock, Woodburn, New Italy, Alstonville, Rappville, Tabulam and surrounding national parks.
All plants seized by police have now been destroyed.
The operation was conducted by Strike Force Unwin, comprising detectives from the Drug Squad’s cannabis team, with assistance from the New South Wales Police Air Wing, Dog Squad and Richmond Local Area Command.
Drug Squad Commander Nick Bingham said illegal drug growers in the Tweed and the rest of New South Wales have been warned.
“You won’t know where or when we’ll strike, but we’ve got your crops in our sights,” Det Supt Bingham said. “Our aim is to detect and destroy cannabis crops across the state.
“Whether it’s a semi-rural crop or on a steep mountainside in a remote part of the state, there’s a very high chance police will find it. If you think you’re safe growing cannabis then think again.”
During the operation police issued five field court attendance notices for cultivation offences and two people were charged with commercial cultiva- tion and supply offences.
The NSW Police Cannabis Eradication Program has been running since the mid-1980s.
Police will conduct a number of similar raids over the next few months in an ongoing effort to target cannabis cultivation.
