Rally For Jailed Medical Cannabis Distributor

A group of supporters of medical cannabis will rally outside the Kempsey office of Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner today.

The rally is being arranged by the wife of Tony Bower, who is serving a 12 month jail term for growing cannabis and distributing a cannabis tincture to cancer, MS and epilepsy sufferers.

Julie Bower says her husband has helped dozens of people and was even called to give evidence at the recent senate inquiry into medical cannabis use.

"Tony was invited down to the Senate inquiry into medical cannabis and spoke to them.

"They asked him down because of his knowledge and now he's in jail for the same thing," she said.

Ms Bower says it's time the government acknowledged the value of medicinal cannabis.

She says her husband has helped people suffering from medical problems for many years and that recent parliamentary findings have justified her husband's activities.

"They finally realised that there is really a need to do something because people do receive benefits from it and that's quite obvious in all our research.

"We give people surveys and they write back," Ms Bower said.

"Even the scientists are starting to realise it now.

"We're actually in negotiations with research facilities now to run proper clinical trials using the tincture - that's sort of a bit sad now because if this had happened a while back Tony wouldn't be in prison now," she said.
