Cannabis Couple Who Used Drug For Faith, Jailed

A West Australian couple has been jailed for cultivating 140 cannabis plants which they had argued was to meet their 'extremely heavy' use of the drug as part of their Rastafarian faith.

47-year-old Alan Richard Simpson and 46-year-old Adriana Mary Melia were handed a 12-month jail term in the Albany District Court.

Prosecutors argued police found such a large quantity of cannabis on their property, in WA's Great Southern, it could have produced up to 42,000 joints.

Simpson and Melia insisted it was to meet their personal habit of 10 to 12 joints per day each as part of their Rastafarian faith.

But the sentencing judge rejected that argument and said it was a 'sophisticated' plan to ease the couple's financial problems.

They will be eligible for parole in six months.
