A field beside a subway station in the western city of St. Petersburg was mistakenly sowed with cannabis seeds instead of grass, Russia's Ria Novosti news agency reported.

Officials from the Federal Drug Control Service were quick to uproot some 230 cannabis plants.

The incident occurred after local authorities bought some land to develop near the subway station.

Authorities then received a tip-off saying the cannabis had begun growing on the land.

An investigation is now underway into how the cannabis seeds came to be in the soil.

The soil on the land, next to Brateyevo subway station, is being replaced.

'Some 230 cannabis plants were dug out ... The next challenge is to define the origins of the soil they grew on, and to find out how on earth cannabis seeds could be present there,' the Russia's Federal Drug Control service said.
