Okay I've been looking for topics about smell and am looking in the wrong places I guess. At what time does it start to smell, I think I smell it now but it could also just be my own smoking. I've never been around a plant so I don't know what to expect with one to three plants. And how do I control it or mask it without spending a ton. Thanks

Depends on the strain as far as when they really lay the stink on.
I have one strain that reeks while still in flower. Most will start getting bad half way into the flowering cycle. But there are also other strains, Northern Lights for example, that put out very little odor even at maturity.
Your best bet is to go with the carbon filter.

Thanks, I was asking because I think I smell it but it's only on its 6 node. But I wasn't sure since other herbs have a smell without flowering like mint and oregano and such. I'm also growing herbs for cooking in the same box and they seem to love their new environment.
