Madrid - Four hospitals and about 60 Catalan chemists are to start offering marijuana for medicinal purposes, in what would be a first for Spain, a regional health official said.

Marina Geli, a health advisor for the Catalan regional government based in eastern Spain, said an agreement to that effect between regional authorities and the national health ministry would be signed shortly.

She did not say how many sick people the move would affect.

The marijuana would be distributed under strict medical guidance, and only in cases where there was no other effective treatment, she added.

The move follows a proposal by a regional grouping of chemists who said it would be useful in relieving pain and nausea suffered by cancer and multiple sclerosis patients and anorexia among AIDS

Rafael Manzanera, head of the Catalan regional health authority, said this would allow proper medical supervision of patients who took marijuana as pain relief, and "has nothing to do with recreational use of this substance."
