Sounds like you are growing a monster plant!! 
He who has the most bark/brown on stump wins!
I would not worry as long as the plant looks happy, I would say you have a plant that has a big thick stump, the brown is much harder than the green, brown stalk keeps critters from piercing the stalk. Most critters can only pierce the green/upper part of stalk.
