Albany - The state Health Department said Wednesday it has created an online system allowing eligible New Yorkers to enroll in the medical marijuana program that begins in January.

To take advantage of the medical marijuana program authorized by the Legislature last year, patients must receive state certification from a registered physician before applying online for a registry identification card.

The law allows medical marijuana to treat 10 serious illnesses and conditions, including cancer, HIV and AIDS, Lou Gehrig’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases, epilepsy, some spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis.
