How much do you know about the origins of the cannabis strain Cookies?

Formally known as Girl Scout Cookies (GSC for short), the genetic varieties of this strain have quite literally taken over the cannabis market.

Today, the Cookies Family is responsible for dominating cannabis varieties for the last decade and a half.

They bring a whole new meaning to the term flower power.

Through the power of premium cannabis genetics and powerful collaborations, the origins of Girl Scout Cookies is a true testament to cannabis cultivation and culture.

There’s nothing like a rags to riches success story to make you feel all warm and fuzzy.

This origin story is no different.

By enhancing the lives of medical cannabis patients, enriching the lives of recreational cannabis users, and generating an astronomical amount of revenue by doing so, the Cookies Fam has quite the history.

Let’s take a look at how Cookies came to be the powerhouse strain it is today, and what the Family is up to now.

OG Genetics: The Beginning

Straight out of the San Francisco Bay area, Jigga (Jai) Chang and Mr. Sherbinski (Mario Guzman) began their journey of what would become one of the biggest players in the premium cannabis industry.

Both of these guys have pretty impressive origin stories of their own. Who knows, maybe that’s what I’ll write about next.

Want to impress your cannabis friends with interesting tidbits of cannabis culture?

If you have the time, do some digging, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Unofficially, Girl Scout Cookies was initially created in 2007 when Jigga crossed his coveted F1 Durban with Flo Rida Kush (an OG Kush variation).
In 2008, cannabis cultivation pro Ghost of ABF Genetics got his hands on GSC and gave away four cuts.

He is quoted as saying: “It was like curled up in a Ziploc baggie, this little, abused piece of flower,” He says. “...I remember grinding it up and smoking it and thinking, ‘Wow, it’s a super unique, tasty flower.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I gotta track down the cut.’”

That simple act is what started the spread of Girl Scout Cookies not just around California, but around the globe.

Officially, the Cookies Fam has been breeding out of this world cannabis genetics since 2010.

Entrepreneur, marketing extraordinaire and rapper Berner (Gilbert Milam Jr.) hails from The Golden City and is the reason why Girl Scout Cookies is a household name.

Cookies: Post 2010

By 2010 every breeder, cultivator, and cannabis seed enthusiast had some sort of Cookies strain for sale.

From Animal Cookies (created by the Cookies Family) to Zkittles/Cookies, everyone slapped the name Cookies on their own take of this cult-classic.

The founders at Cookies Fam call these variations “fortune cookies”.

Girl Scout Cookies: Aroma, Effects & Flavor

When it comes to aroma, GSC is known for its complexity.

The sweet and danky smell hits you hard when you first bust up a nug. It’s then followed by a slight pine aroma with creamy undertones.

The taste of Girl Scout Cookies is heavenly. With chocolate and mint undertones, you can expect a creamy, sweet, and earthy flavor upon your first toke.

You can expect a perfect balance of feeling calm and productive when you consume GSC (or one of its offspring varieties).

With a rush of euphoric happiness that sweeps over you upon your first hit, any stress you have will wash away without feeling sleepy.

That being said, the effects you feel will depend on your endocannabinoid system (ECS) and what your body needs help with balancing out.

Cookies Cannabis Strains: Today

These days, the OG GSC (as well as its offspring varieties) genetics reign supreme.

We even have our own take on this cannabis classic: Canuk Cookies.

The Cookies Fam is hard at work bringing nothing but excellent genetics to market.

Winning multiple awards and several Cannabis Cups, there’s no stopping this team.

Most recently Runtz (the offspring of Gelato and Zkittles) won Leafly Strain of the Year 2020.

Cookies Offspring

Wedding Cake

Wedding Cake, otherwise known as Pink Cookies here in the great white North (Canada), is a potent hybrid that possesses mostly indica traits and effects.

In 2018, this strain won first place Best Hybrid in the SoCal Medical Cannabis Cup.

Thanks to its parental lineage of GSC and Cherry pie, Wedding Cake has an awesome terpene profile.

This strain boasts powerful genetics that produces a range of taste and flavors.

Everything from sour, vanilla, sweet and rich, to tangy and peppery undertones, Wedding Cake is one of my personal favorite strains derived from the Cookies lineage.

Cannabis consumers and cultivators describe the effects of this strain as cerebral, uplifting, relaxing, happy and creative.

Major terpenes: limonene, beta-caryophyllene, myrcene
Minor terpenes: humulene, linalool. Beta-pinene, alpha-pinene
Effects: relaxing, calming, soothing, sleepy, happy, euphoric
Therapeutic properties: anxiety, stress, pain, depression, sleep issues

Sunset Sherbet

Thanks to the Cookies Family, Sunset Sherbet is one of the most well-balanced hybrid cannabis strains currently on the market.
(It also has an impressive origin story.)

This strain provides both sativa and indica-like effects.

Depending on your ECS (endocannabinoid system), feeling energized, happy, and blissful are the sativa-like effects this strain possesses.

However, the indica-like properties help promote relaxation, and the ability to focus.

Sunset Sherbet is an ideal choice for those wanting relief from fatigue, stress, depression, and pain.

Major terpenes: beta-caryophyllene, limonene, fenchol
Minor terpenes: humulene, linalool
Effects: euphoria, happiness, creativity, sociable
Therapeutic properties: may reduce pain, stress, fatigue, depression, appetite loss

Gelato

In February 2014 Chris Simunek published an article. His inside look at Girl Scout Cookies, and the folks who created her explains how Cookies became the success story it is today.

One of the most fascinating parts of the article include how Chris was given the opportunity to pollinate and name one of the Cookies Family’s latest strains.

Enter: Gelato.

Thin Mint GSC and Sunset Sherbet are the parental strains that make Gelato.

Just like its name, this cannabis variety has a sweet and creamy aroma.

However, the taste is a little more complex.

It’s known to be earthy and citrusy with fruity undertones.

You can expect a strong body high that creates calming and relaxing effects.

If you’re looking for a strain to unwind, enhance productivity, or chillout after a long day, Gelato is a perfect choice.

Major terpenes: beta-caryophyllene, limonene
Minor terpenes: myrcene, linalool, humulene, a-pinene
Effects: mood-boosting, relaxing, happy, productivity
Therapeutic properties: decreases anxiety, pain, depression, promotes sleep

Good read. Enjoyed that a lot.
