Topical ointments: Questions

Is anyone familiar with making infused topical ointments. I have a friend suffering from cancer and can't sleep b/c chemo destroyed his spine. He'd love an ointment for back pain. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to make topicals? Someone with experience would be great. My lab is my kitchen so I'm limited.
