Wyo. - What started as a routine traffic stop turned into a major marijuana bust in southwest Wyoming Wednesday.

State Troopers pulled over a rental car driver for speeding on eastbound I-80 near Rock Springs and, when he gave them inconsistent information about his travel plans, they decided call in a K-9 officer.

After sniffing around for just a few moments, the dog alerted troopers to something suspicious in the truck. Inside, they found two large, green duffle bags containing 39 pounds of “high grade” marijuana with an estimated street value of $234,000, the Wyoming Highway Patrol said.

“The drug smugglers had attempted to conceal the odor of the shipment by placing drier sheets and an unknown white powdery substance in with the shrink wrapping,” said Sgt. Stephen Townsend. “There were also odor absorbers placed in the trunk with the duffle bags.”

“It is unknown if the smugglers had intended for the masking agents to make the marijuana odor undetectable to humans or to drug sniffing K-9’s. Their efforts did not thwart the K-9 however,” Townsend said.

Samuel Quinlan, 26, from Jaffrey, New Hampshire, has been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Investigators believe he was transporting the marijuana from Lake Tahoe, California to an undisclosed location in Denver, Colorado and/or New Hampshire.
