An online antique dealer who set up his business with help from the Prince’s Trust sold drugs in a bid to pay the bills, a court heard.

Nathan Little, of College Street, Long Eaton, pleaded guilty to the production of cannabis, which was found by police on September 30 last year.

The 29-year-old, who appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday February 27, broke down in tears as he was given an eight-month jail term, suspended for two years, and ordered to pay a £100 victim surcharge.

The court heard how police found 22 cannabis plants grown by Little in a house last year – ten were assessed as being mature, with younger plants found in a cupboard.

Defence lawyer William Bennett said: “There was a commercial aspect to his actions, he sold cannabis to his friends to pay for bills.”

As well as the cannabis plants police also found associated paraphernalia in the house.

The court heard how Little had cooperated with police from the outset and admitted his guilt at the earliest opportunity.

In mitigation, Little had asked his lawyer to offer a public apology to his parents.

Mr Bennett said: “He realises how much shame he has brought on his family’s name.

“Since the shock of these proceedings he has managed to stop smoking cannabis, and this is a habit he had been dealing with for ten years.”

Throughout the sentencing Little appeared distressed and tearful.

Mr Bennett told the court how Little had become more focused on his business since quitting the drug.

Little had set up an online antique dealing business with money from the Prince’s Trust – a youth charity which supports 13 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed or are struggling at school and at risk of exclusion.

Recorder Satinder Hunjan QC said Little had shown remorse. But he added: “Since the previous occurred you have turned your life around.”

As well as his suspended sentence and victim surcharge, Little was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.
